Hash and cannabis rosin are completely solvent-less cannabis concentrates. They can be smoked, dabbed and even used in edibles, but the most efficient way to experience the finer hashes and rosins is by dabbing with an electronic vaporizer with an easily controlled temperature gauge like the Puffco Plus.
Hash is a cannabis concentrate made with the gentle agitation of ice and water to separate the trichome heads from the plant material. These tiny hair-like structures contain the majority of cannabinoids and terpenes present in the whole plant. Finally, the trichomes are strained from the water using a series of mesh screen bags that are measured by microns, which allows them to separate and isolate trichomes by size. It’s a fairly simple process of mechanical separation, adding a modern influence to the time-honored traditions of hashish refinement.
A lot of consumers are unfamiliar with hash rosin. Like hash, it is a cannabis concentrate that is made through the extraction process of separating the trichome heads from the whole plant material through gentle agitation with ice and water and filtered through mesh bags. The difference is there is one more process after extraction. It is then pressed using heat and pressure from pneumatic plates, rupturing the trichomes. This method preserves the natural terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids in cannabis to create an all-natural concentrate. Similar to hash, the effects of the final product yield a higher potency than smoking flowers as the terpenes and cannabinoids (including THC content) are more concentrated.
Artisan hashes and rosins are becoming more and more popular with cannabis consumers, but there are still plenty of people who don’t know what they are. These concentrates are known as living extracts because for starting material they use fresh frozen plants at their peak ripeness in order to preserve the full and natural spectrum of cannabinoids and the terpene profile of the cannabis flower. This means that when you smoke it, you can experience all the wonderful flavor that naturally occurs in the fresh plant! These must be carefully stored and kept cold to preserve the high terpene content and also the quality of the cannabinoids. Ice water hash must be kept frozen at all times so that it maintains a sand-like consistency and does not melt. Low temperatures are your favorite concentrate’s friend!
High-grade hash or rosin should always be thawed before you use it to avoid wasting product. When defrosting, allow it to sit outside the freezer for about 10 to 15 minutes, and then prevent moisture from entering your concentrate by wiping off the jar before opening it to avoid getting any condensation in the jar. Once you’ve separated the amount that you want to use for consumption, if it’s a fine hash, return it to the freezer and if it’s one of the other formats like rosin, you can put it in the fridge. If you’re not going to be using your hash or your rosin for a good long time, you want to keep it all in the freezer, but always freeze the hash because that helps it maintain its sandy texture and preserves the terpenes. This will ensure that it tastes just as wonderful from the first dab to the very last.
